  • [01] Agreement in principle on legislation for out-of-court settlement of debts for businesses

The government and the representatives of the institutions have agreed in principle for the creation of a legislative framework for the out-of-court settlement of debts accumulated by businesses and the self-employed, during a meeting in Athens on Sunday.

Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis presented the main points of the draft bill whose eligibility criteria and time frame are still being debated with the institutions. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday (Oct. 26) afternoon to discuss the issue.

Stathakis said after the meeting the government aims at including as many interested parties as possible in the scheme, provided they fulfill some minimum criteria. The representatives of the institutions were also briefed on the bills being prepared that concern the creation of a one-stop agency for businesses to facilitate licensing and the modernization of the supply chain.

[02] Labour minister tells ANA he believes negotiations will end with reversal of labour deregulation

Labour Minister George Katrougalos expressed optimism that the government's negotiations with the institutions over labour law reforms will conclude with a reversal of labour deregulation, in his interview with Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

"Negotiations were particularly tough because as you know the extreme player has extreme positions. But we ask for Greece to return to European normalcy, to what all other countries have. This is why, as you have seen, all the European bodies that have stated their opinion – from the European Parliament to the Council of Minsters – in reality are very close to our positions, for the simple reason that our positions are, not just the European average, but the European social model," Katrougalos told ANA.

"This is why I'm optimistic that will indeed be able to reverse the labour deregulation of the last few years," he added.

He also said the International Monetary Fund asks for more reforms, such as to reopen the social security issue because it didn't like the system, but these issues have been closed with Greece's European partners. "This phase of the negotiation has ended, we're not going back".

[03] CMEC president to visit Athens for Monday for signing of PPC deal

The president of the China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), Zhang Chun, will visit Athens on Monday, heading a delegation of senior company executives, for talks with Greece's power utility PPC and the signing of the strategic partnership agreement in the country and the wider region.

Last month, the two companies signed an MoU to utilize local lignite mines and to construct Meliti II, a second power station for PPC in Meliti, Florina. The two sides completed negotiations on the MoU ahead of the meeting and will now focus on the construction of Melliti II.

In a separate announcement, PPC said today the company and its advisers are currently examining the documents provided by the two companies that submitted binding bids for the sale of a 24 percent stake in power grid operator ADMIE, China's State Grid International Development Limited and Italy's Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale SpA in collaboration with F2i SGR SpA.
