  • [01] Possible negative decision on TV licensing law by Council of State will be bad for democracy, says State minister

A possible negative decision by the Council of State on the government's TV licensing law will be a bad development for the operation of democracy, State Minister Nikos Pappas said on Friday, speaking to radio station Real FM.

He said the State will have to return the money it took from the businessmen who have submitted the first tranche of the licensing bid, instead of using it to support weaker households.

"If the law on TV licenses is found unconstitutional it will not be a pleasant development, not for the government, but for the operation of democracy." Pappas told the radio station.

"It will force the State to return money. It will be a bad decision for public finances which will return money to people who have a great financial standing and take it from government actions that were targeting people with a very low financial ability. This will be an ethical injustice," he added.

[02] New Democracy criticizes Justice minister for handling of top court judge's case

New Democracy criticized Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos on Friday for his handling of the case of the top court judge's email leak, saying he was aware of the case and chose to publicize it now in an attempt to influence justice.

"Mr. Paraskevopoulos admitted today that he had been officially informed since November 2015 about the case of the top court judge, but chose not to investigate it as he doubted the legality of the material's origin," the party said in a press release.

"We assessed he had to keep it in his drawer for a whole year and pulled it out when the judge objected to the postponement of the ruling by the Supreme Court on the known issue of the unconstitutionality of Pappas' law [TV licensing law]," he added.

Therefore, ND said, the minister "acted according to a comprehensive government plan, an unacceptable manipulation which he confessed to."

[03] Cancer is the result of life choices and environmental conditions, Professor Hochberg tells ANA

The increase in life expectancy as well as the environmental pollution and modern lifestyle, has enhanced the risk of suffering from cancer.

With regard to cancer in animals in captivity, it is indicative that the deaths amounted to approximately 15 percent a figure estimated to be much lower in nature and is attributed mainly to the administration of contraceptives in female animals in captivity, said Michael Hochberg, professor specializing in evolutionary ecology of Montpellier University (Montpellier).

Hochberg is a guest speaker at the 8th Panhellenic Ecology Conference, organized by the Greek Ecological Society and the Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH).

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on the sidelines of the conference, the professor explained that when people suffer from some form of cancer, "there is always something wrong with the environment."

"It is ironic that because we live longer, we have increased chances of suffering from cancer. This is because our way of life has changed; there is more exposure to UV radiation, and food has chemical additives," Hochberg stated adding that a healthy lifestyle from a young age is vital for avoiding cancer in later years.

"I refer to the future impact of our choices as there are estimates that a tumor or a melanoma needs 20-50 years to grow. In order to be identified, it needs to be at least one centimeter but when the pancreatic cancer and stomach cancer are located it is too late. So we have to realize that when cancer appears at 60, it is not something sudden, but it is the result of conditions and life choices of the previous years," the professor said noting that "we have virtually changed the way we interact with the environment."

He added that cancer in animals in captivity is increased due to the stress they have when they do not live in their natural environment. "Many wild animals in captivity are sick and die from cancer, mainly due to contraceptives administered to females. In fact, under these conditions, a 15-20 percent of cheetahs and lions die of cancer," the professor stated.
