  • [01] US Treasury Secretary says Greece needs debt restructuring as soon as possible

Greece's debt should be restructured as soon as possible, said U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Thursday, noting that delaying it creates difficulties for the country that sustains it.

"The only consistent answer to a non-sustainable debt is its restructuring," Lew said, responding to questions during an event at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington DC, where he discussed the US agenda ahead of the IMF and World Bank annual meetings.

"The more you delay it, the harder it gets for the economy sustaining it," he added.

Lew said the U.S. has long been involved in Greece's matters that concern the economic situation and its debt. "Thankfully, we are not in a phase of a direct crisis. The issue is what we can do to avoid putting ourselves in a situation of a crisis again," he said, adding that the country's last deal with its creditors stated that debt restructuring should be on the table and that it's not sustainable.

[02] ND leader says his party will not allow deviations from constitution

Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday his party will never allow any deviations from the constitution and reiterated his request for elections, during a speech at the city of Agrinio, where he is visiting.

"New Democracy will never allow deviations from the imperatives of the Constitution. New democracy will continue to defend the rule of law in the country. It is a responsible political force which today demands elections so that we can finally set the country in the right course," he said.

Mitsotakis also said ND is the "institutional embankment" to the country's continuous slide, noting the alternative way is New Democracy's "Truth agreement" to exit the crisis.

[03] Parliament passes bill for the restructuring of civil aviation

Parliament approved with a wide majority on Thursday a draft bill for the restructuring of Greece's Civil Aviation Authority, one of the prior actions demanded by the country's lenders to disburse the 2.8-billion-euro sub-tranche of its loan.

With 252 lawmakers present, 156 voted in favour (SYRIZA, ANEL, Centrist's Union), 79 voted against (New Democracy, Golden dawn and the Communist Party) and 17 voted "present" (Democratic Coalition, Potami).
