  • [01] IMF official reiterates need to restructure Greece's debt

Greece's European lenders need to proceed with a significant restructuring of the country's debt to make it sustainable, the Director of the IMF's Fiscal Affairs Department, Vitor Gaspar, said on Wednesday, during the presentation of the Fund's October Fiscal Monitor report.

Asked on the issue, Gaspar said the IMF supports the efforts for structural reforms and adjustments in politics in order to achieve realistic goals. These goals, he added, require that Europeans accept a request to restructure Greece's public debt.

[02] Government, opposition reactions to resignation of senior Council of State justices

Main opposition New Democracy's "instant response" to the resignation of two senior judges from the Council of State Judicial Functionaries' Union, as well as Tuesday's speech by ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, were an attempt to interfere with the course of justice, a press release from the prime minister's office asserted on Wednesday.

"They make it clear, to even the most unsuspecting citizen, who is seeking to use all ways and means in order to affect the decisions of justice," the announcement said.

ND spokesman George Koumoutsakos, on his part, accused the government of interference and expressed ND's acute concern over the state of Greek justice, claiming "serious dysfunctions, strange manipulation and unacceptable government intervention" in its workings. The two resignations on Wednesday only served to confirm and strengthen ND's concerns, he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, CoS judges Christos Rammos and Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou resigned from the CoS Judicial Functionaries Union in protest against a decision taken by CoS President Nikolaos Sakellariou last Friday to postpone a meeting on the television licences tender, as well as the disagreement between Sakellariou and other members of the court.

The Union had later issued an announcement saying that the only reason for postponing the meeting was "the atmosphere generated by the public statements and expressions regarding the outcome of the plenum's council on these issues."

Rammos and Sakellaropoulou on Wednesday strongly criticised the Union announcement as a "major faux pas" and accused it was acting as a "press office for Sakellariou," while denouncing the postponement as a "refusal of justice".

[03] Foreign ministry: Greece is not discussing the issue of Cham Albanians

Greece is not discussing the issue of Cham Albanians in its bilateral talks with the neighbouring country, the foreign ministry said in a press release on Wednesday, responding to claims the issue is up for discussion.

"Greece is not discussing the 'Cham' issue nor is it negotiating with third parties the rulings of Greek courts against those who collaborated with the German occupiers. The Foreign Ministry feels obliged to refute, once again, those who argue that," the ministry said.

Greece has proposed to Albania a discussion on a series of issues which remain open for both sides, but the Cham issue is not one of them, the ministry continued. "The Albanian side wanted it and asked for it [to be included]. The Greek side didn't accept it," it said.

The foreign ministry also said that the non-paper issued as a basis for bilateral talks only mentioned the Chams once, in the second paragraph of article B.2 where it stated that "in no way do we see rights for the so-called Chams", so as to clarify that the issue is not under discussion.
