  • [01] PM Alexis Tsipras expected to attend EU 'mini-Summit' on refugee crisis in Austria

VIENNA (ANA/ D. Dimitrakoudis) Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is expected to take part in the EU "mini-Summit" on the refugee issue that Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern will convene in Vienna in coming weeks. His contribution at the summit, as leader of a country directly affected by the refugee crisis, is expected to be particularly significant.

No firm date has yet been set but the mini-summit will be held after the Bratislava European Council on September 16. In addition to the Greek prime minister, others attending will include German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of Slovenia, Croatia and Bulgaria.

Kern's initiative - reinforced by Merkel's attendance - is seen as a move counter to the extreme anti-refugee stance adopted by Austria's far-right nationalist party and also the harsh line adopted by the country's foreign minister, Sebastian Kurz. The mini-Summit is also seen as pre-empting a repetition of Kurz's Western Balkans Conference last February, which excluded Greece.

[02] Israel Philharmonic Orchestra opens Athens Concert Hall's new season

Almost a year after its last appearance in Athens, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the city and the Athens Concert Hall for two concerts on September 17 and 18, opening the venue's new artistic season for 2016-17.

On the first night, conductor Zubin Mehta will interpret works by Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Schubert, with soloist Marcel Bergman in the cello, while on the second concert, Mehta has chosen exclusively works by Richard Straus. The masterpiece "Four Last Songs" (Vier letzte Lieder) will be performed by leading American soprano Kristin Lewis.

Lewis is a lyrico-spinto soprano, known for her Verdi repertoire. She has performed in many famous opera houses around the world under the guidance of leading maestros. She cooperates often with Mehta with whom she has performed in Mahler's second symphony, Beethoven's ninth and Verdi's Requiem.

Advance bookings for the concerts start on August 29. Both concerts start at 21:00.
