  • [01] President Pavlopoulos offers condolences to Italian President Mattarella

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Wednesday sent his condolences to the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella for the death of tens of citizens after the earthquake that hit central Italy, on the regions of Lazio and Umbria.

"On behalf of the Greek people and myself personally, I (express) my sincere condolences and sincere sympathy to the victims' families, as well as my wishes for the rescue of the survivors," Pavlopoulos said.

[02] The 100-installment settlement for debt to social security funds has not ended, Labour Min Katrougalos says

In the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will talk about Greece's growth and will not just announce a list of promises, Labour Minister George Katrougalos said in an interview with Skai TV on Wednesday.

He underlined that in the negotiations with the creditors the government will try to find ways to offer a settlement to those who owe to social security funds. "The 100-installment settlement for debt to social security funds has not ended," he added.

[03] UN High Commissioner for Refugees Grandi meets Pavlopoulos, Tsipras

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi on Wednesday had separate meetings with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras with whom he discussed the refugee issue and praised Greece's role in receiving and providing hospitality to refugees at a time when other European countries closed their borders.

Pavlopoulos referred to the United Nations contribution to tackling the refugee crisis in Greece, and not only in the implementation of the EU-Turkey agreement which he described as the most secure, at least based on current standards.

On his part, Grandi said "in a continent, in a world, turned out to be hostile towards refugees, Greece has set an example of solidarity."

Grandi thanked Tsipras for Greece's stance on the refugee issue and said that Italy has also helped the refugees and so both countries have given lessons of solidarity to the rest of Europe.

    [04] Discover the eastern Aegean-Chios

It is undoubtedly the most fragrant island of the Aegean. The citrus, mastic and wild herb trees all over the island diffuse inebriating perfumes hardly encountered elsewhere.

The beaches of the island - Mavra Volia and Daskalopetra Elinta, Lithi, Giosonas and Nagos, Komi and Limnia - are famous for their crystal clear waters.

A visit to the medieval, well preserved villages of the island is a reminiscent of other eras. Among these villages are the famous Mastichoria and Pyrgi with the unique architecture, Mesta, Olympi, Kalamoti, Armolia, and Desa. The island's medieval castles in the town as well as the villages of Volissos, Armolia, and Kampia are also worth visiting.

People interested in religious tourism can visit Nea Moni, dedicated to the Assumption, a remarkable monument of the 11th century, that has been included in the UNESCO list of monuments of world heritage. Panagia Krina (12th century) is located at Vavilous island, and St. Markella with the known icons, are also reference points for visitors.

The trademark of the island is the mastic tree that does not grow anywhere else in the world.

You can visit Chios in September and October taking advantage of the special discounts offered by the island's hoteliers.
