  • [01] President Pavlopoulos receives Archbishop, expresses Greece's support to French people

President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Friday met Archibishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos at the presidential mansion, expressing the Greek people's support to the French after Thursday's shocking terror strike in Nice.

The French people are not alone in the face of this calamity, Pavlopoulos stressed. They had the support of all the people of Europe and primarily of the Greeks "because we understand that the fundamental principle that must inspire Europe, our common family, at these crucial hours is solidarity," he noted. According to the Greek president, without solidarity in the face of such disasters and all the issues created by the crisis, Europe would be unable to go forward.

Pavlopoulos also praised the role of the Church throughout the years of crisis, saying Greece had been able to avoid a rupture of its social fabric largely because the institutions of the family and Church still worked in the country. The president made a particular reference to the contribution of the Church charity Apostoli in dealing with the refugee crisis and in helping house and care for refugees, especially children and young people.

"Apostoli gives them the opportunity to live as equals among us, to develop their personalities and, chiefly, to offer to society what they can," he said.

The Archbishop was accompanied by a group of young refugees housed in a Church hostel for unaccompanied refugee and migrant children.
