  • [01] EU leaders will say they regret Britain's decision but will not take any decisions, says Bruegel analyst

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/M. Aroni) – The 27 EU leaders who will meet on June 28-29 in Brussels to discuss the results of the British referendum will express their regret over the outcome but will not take any decisions, Bruegel Senior Fellow Zsolt Darvas told ANA-MPA on Monday.

Darvas said EU leaders cannot pressure British Prime Minister David Cameron to activate article 50 of the European Treaty to leave the union before the British parliament decides to do so.

"The heads of state and government will be satisfied with a statement in which they will express their regret. They cannot do more," he said, adding that although there has been pressure on Cameron in this direction, German Chancellor Angela Merkel recognized that time must be given to Britain.

[02] Wildfire at Dervenohoria rages uncontrollably, says fire brigade

A large wildfire in the area of Dervenohoria in Boeotia, central Greece, is raging uncontrollably towards three different directions after strong winds rekindled the flames, the fire brigade said on Monday evening.

The blaze initially seemed to be getting under control earlier in the day but winds in the evening rekindled the flames and started new fires in inaccessible ravines where it's impossible to send crews or vehicles, fire brigade officials said, noting that so far no villages are in danger.

Aerial firefighting has stopped for the night and will resume operations in the morning.

The fire brigade also said the blaze has formed a perimeter of several thousand kilometers and is moving towards three separate directions: the villages of Panaktos, Prasino and Lefka, a second one south of Stefani and a third towards the TITAN cement factory and the Frangos quarries

There is no estimate so far for the size of the damage, which will be assessed after the fire is extinguished, but the first rough calculations estimate that several thousand acres of pine forest have been burned.
