  • [01] The rights of refugees must always be protected, Ban Ki Moon says in statement to ANA-MPA

    The rights of refugees forced to leave their homes must continue to be protected at all times, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said in a statement to the ANA-MPA shortly before his arrival in Greece on Friday.

    "I continue to stress the need for providing assistance and support to those rescued, ensuring adequate reception condition and access to asylum for those in need of international protection. The rights of men, women and children who were forced to leave, have to be protected at all times, in law and in practice," he said.

    The UN Secretary General is scheduled to meet President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras before travelling to the Aegean island of Lesvos on Saturday.

    [02] ESM approves 7.5 bln euro disbursement to Greece

    The ESM approved on Friday the disbursement of a 7.5 billion euro loan tranche to Greece, according to a statement posted on Twitter.

    "ESM Board of Directors approves 7.5 billion euro disbursement to Greece," the statement said.

    The disbursement of Greece's 7.5-billion-euro tranche is expected to be made at the start of the next week, the head of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) Klaus Regling said during a press conference in Luxembourg.

    He said it is the first sub-tranche of the second installment, totaling 10.3 billion euros.

    [03] UN sec gen Ban Ki-moon to visit Solidarity Athens Centre

    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday will visit the Solidarity Athens Centre that provides medical, legal and psycho-social services to vulnerable population groups.

    The secretary general will meet with the president of the organisation "Solidarity Now" Stelios Zavos, employees and volunteers.

    Ban Ki-moon will meet Greek officials on Friday and Saturday and then will visit Lesvos to speak with refugees, migrants, asylum applicants and volunteers.

    [04] 56,814 identified migrants and refugees in Greece on Friday

    A total of 56,814 identified refugees and migrants were on the Greek territory on Friday.

    8,428 refugees are on the Aegean islands, including 161 new arrivals.

    According to the Refugee Crisis Management Coordination Body's figures, 23,893 of the refugees are in northern Greece, 9,958 of the refugees are in organised facilities, 2,171 are hosted in different areas in central Greece and 248 in southern Greece.

    5,698 refugees and migrants are hosted in several facilities rented by the UNHCR, 4while approximately 1,500 persons are living outside organised facilities.
