[01] President Pavlopoulos receives New Zealand Governor General
President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Tuesday
received New Zealand Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae, who is
visiting Greece to attend celebrations marking the 75th anniversary
since the Battle of Crete.
Meeting the Governor General, President Pavlopoulos underlined that
Greeks will never forget the huge contribution that New Zealanders made
at the Battle of Crete, where 671 fell in battle and 2,000 were taken
prisoner out of a total of 7,700 that fought in the battle. The Battle of
Crete was significant on a European and global level, Pavlopoulos added,
helping to more quickly end Nazi atrocities and barbarity.
Mateparae was accompanied by New Zealand's Education Minister Hekia
Parata, whose grandfather had fought in the Battle of Crete and
referred to further enhancing the friendly ties between Greece and New
Zealand. Attending on the Greek side was Alternate Development Minister
for Tourism Elena Kountoura.
