  • [01] Refugee issue is the biggest challenge for Europe, President Pavlopoulos says

    The refugee issue is the biggest challenge for Europe and each partner is being tested every day on whether it deserves to be an integral part of the whole European structure, Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said during his address to a conference of the National Commission Against Racism and Intolerance.

    It is an existential issue for the European Union since its commitment to the founding principles and values is tested via the stance of European institutions and European Peoples towards the refugees. Above all, the principles and values of humanism and solidarity, he added.

    Referring to Greece's stance, the President reiterated that "Greece, all Greek people have proved that, faithful to the heritage of the Ancient Greek Spirit and culture, we have faced, we are facing and will face the refugees according to the aforementioned fundamental European principles and values of humanism and solidarity."

    He underlined that the rest of our EU partners should adopt the same behaviour as well as third countries aspiring to join the European family.

    "2016 is the year of the implementation of the growth plan that was drafted in parralel and additionally to the agreement," stated government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili on Wednesday addressing the Hellenic Entrepreneurship Association's (EENE) 3rd Annual Economic Forum, entitled: Challenges for Growth.

    Gerovassili referred to the change of the development law with aim the attraction of investment, of an extroverted policy and the promotion of the country's digital upgrading with the establishment of a Digital Policy General Secretariat and alternative means of financing small and medium size enterprises via the Development Bank.

    She said that the government succeded, for the first time in the last six years, to increase the public investments programme and faciliated that synergies between private and public sector and in parallel it takes advantage of the so-called Juncker package for important investments.

    "Emphasis will be put on development and not on restrictive measures. This is the only way to recover and be self-reliant in the market," underlined Gerovassili adding that "the outstanding issue of the review hinders the immediate implementation of the growth plan."

    Referring to the negotiations with the institutions she noted: "Despite the fact that we presented complete proposals on the pension and tax reform, the disagreements among the institutions delay the completion of the procedure," she said adding that "Our intention is to meet August's agreement and that's all."
