[01] Unfortunate and not helpful the unilateral closure of borders in
Balkans, said Peter Altmaier (Die Welt)
"We have worked very closely and constructively with Austria on the
(refugees) crisis. However, we consider the decision for the unilateral
closure of the borders as most unfortunate and not helpful. In the long
run this will lead us again to the point that the countries of the
EU will be summoned to resolve the situation (caused by the refugees
problem) in Greece", told the head of the German Chancelorship for the
refugees Peter Altmaier in an interview with the German newspaper Die
Welt on Thursday.
Altmaier reacted by making these remarks to the reporter's question if
the regulatory role Austria aspires to take over in Balkans disrupts in
any way the effectiveness of the German propositions about the solution
of the refugees problem.
Asked if Germany and its Chancelor Angela Merkel are isolated because of
these initiatives, Altmaier answered: "This phrase is a cliché and it
was equally wrong both in the case of Greece and the case of Ukrania. In
the end, we could always managed to achieve a European consensus thanks
to the substantial contribution of Germany. Also now is even more proven
that our approach is correct and is backed by many more other countries".
