There is no possibility of 'Grexit, while those "fantasising of underground routes to power" and early elections should "forget it,", government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili said in an interview with the news website newpost.gr published on Friday. The current popular discontent with the government's reforms was logical, she noted, given that the memorandum signed last summer called for harsh measures at its start.

The spokeswoman appeared confident of a successful review of Greece's programme, despite the difficulties in the negotiations, repeating that the government has no plans for further pension cuts.

Greece was meeting and even exceeding the targets agreed in the summer, she pointed out, though this did not mean that all the problems had been overcome. The increase in refugee flows, for example, had created a sort of twin crisis that was both economic and humanitarian, she added.

The demands by certain "extreme political circles in the EU" for a harsher response to the refugee influx were a cause for concern, Gerovassili said, noting that the reply to these voices had to be political and not just Greek.

"There has to be a consensus of progressive forces within the country and within the EU, to isolate these extremist circles," she said.
