  • [01] These people should stop being somebody else, says Susan Sarandon to ANA-MPA

Popular actress and activist Susan Sarandon arrived on Lesvos on Thursday to witness first-hand the refugees' arrival on the island. "The international community must see what is happening in this corner of the world. It must realize the size of the problem and understand it. These people should stop being 'somebody else' and must become the refugees that we must stand by them and support them" stated exclusively to ANA-MPA Susan Sarandon on Friday.

The actress that discussed with volunteers and members of non-governmental organizations operating on the island explained "As mother of three children I completely understand what means to be a mother with children running away from war and the squalor, to reach the coast and to be forced to make this travel only because you must survive. Let's hope that very soon the countries that do not participate in the effort to save all these people will do so" she concluded.

Sarandon is from early Friday at the east coast of Lesvos near the airport and remaines at the spot where boats with migrants arrive on the island. She particularly assists the children, helps them to change their soaked clothes, socks and shoes. A five-year-old Iranian Semihan and her two younger siblings captured Sarandon's heart when the little girl broke into tears while she hold her in her arms "Have courage, you'll make it" she told the young girl's parents when they got on board UN's bus that would take them to the Identification Center at Moria.

According to information, Sarandon will remain on Lesvos and will continue to assist the volunteers and the non-governmental organisations in the reception of the migrants and refugees.

[02] IMF's former and current officials have admitted mistakes in Greek aid program

Since 2013, current and former officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have revealed numerous times that its estimations on the Greek economic programmes included mistakes.

The most recent example was in a report published on Wednesday, in which the Fund admitted it was a mistake not to include a Greek debt restructuring in its 2010 program, as a precondition for its viability.

In 2013, the Fund revealed it used wrong multipliers to calculate the measures imposed, causing deeper austerity to countries such as Greece, Portugal, which resulted in a much bigger drop in domestic demand.

In 2015, Ashoka Mody, visiting professor in international economic policy at Princeton University, criticized in an article in Bloomberg the IMF's handling of the Greek crisis.

Last June, former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, admitted in an article that he should have pressured Eurozone countries more to help Greece and to resist pressures for tough austerity.
