[01] Commission satisfaction with Athens' initiatives to boost border
protection
BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/ M. Aroni) -- The European Commission expressed
satisfaction with three initiatives announced the previous day by the
Tsipras government for better managing the ongoing refugee crisis,
European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Friday.
Noting that these three steps were "in the right direction," Schinas
said they included Greece's decision to trigger the EU Civil Protection
Mechanism to provide emergency aid supplies; an agreement with Frontex to
expand the EU external borders agency's activities on the Greek border
with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), and finally,
a request to activate the Frontex Rapid Border Intervention Teams
(RABIT) on several Aegean islands in order to boost protection of the
EU's external borders.
