  • [01] Greek GDP figures revised downwards in Q3

The Greek economy contracted by 1.1 pct in the third quarter of the year, the Hellenic Statistical Authority announced on Friday, revising downwards an initial estimate for a 0.4-pct reduction in the July-September period.

The statistics service said the Greek economy contracted 0.07 pct on average in the January-September period, and attributed this development to monthly figures for the country's balance of payments and to quarterly figures on turnover in the services sector as well as employment. Ministry officials said this revision was in line with a budget provision for a zero growth rate this year.

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the country's GDP contracted by 1.1 pct in the third quarter compared with the same period last year, while it shrank by 0.9 pct compared with the second quarter of 2015, from a -0.5 pct initial estimate.

[02] PASOK leader: PM must clarify if he still has Parliament majority

Opposition PASOK party leader Fofi Gennimata on Friday reiterated that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras must clearly state whether he still controls a majority of MPs in Parliament, in comments on the premier's initiative for a meeting of party leaders.

"He has the majority. If he does not, let him say so. If he feels that he does not, and that is the purpose of our meeting, let him tells us," she commented.

"The presence of the president of the republic is not necessary for the political leaders to discuss issues such as pension reform, If Mr. Tsipras feels that this is beyond him, or that his government cannot handle it, let him tell us. It is an issue of another order," Gennimata said.

[03] Greece guarding the EU's external borders, PM Tsipras reiterates

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday expressed his government's determination not to remain in the position of a passive observer, but to claim an active role by taking initiatives on the ongoing refugees issue.

Tsipras underlined that Greece is waging a battle to address the refugee issue as a Europe-wide problem, as well as a problem of the neighbouring countries.

He noted that "Greece is meeing its European obligations to set up reception and identification centres for refugees", while he underlined that "Europe must realize that Greece guards the EU borders."

"Neither a fence nor the passing of the problem from one country to another can stop the flow of refugees as a result of war and poverty," he added.
