  • [01] PM Tsipras asks President Pavlopoulos to call political leaders' meeting

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday spoke on the phone with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos to brief him on his contacts in Israel and Palestine and ask him to call a political leaders' meeting when he returns from Rome.

According to government sources, the agenda will include the refugees issue and the necessary social security reforms. The government will listen to the proposals of all parties on social security reforms with the view to achieving consensus and strengthening Greece's negotiating position.

[02] Government council on social security system reforms calls for dialogue with society

The government wants to secure a social security system that is viable and ensures its redistributive nature, the government vice-presidency said in a press release after a meeting of the government council for social policy on Wednesday.

The council, which was chaired by Government Vice-President Yiannis Dragasakis and addressed by Labour Minister George Katrougalos, concluded that review of the reform proposals are moving along.

[03] Delphi claims title of European Capital of Culture 2021

The city of Delphi will submit a bid to be named European Capital of Culture for 2021 with the slogan "Metamorfosis," the mayor of Delphi Thanassis Panagiotopoulos said on Wednesday at a special event held at the National History Museum in Athens.

"Delphi constitutes a landmark for every Greek and European citizen that symbolizes the deepest and most important origins of the current western culture. The municipality of Delphi bears the responsibility and faces the extremely interesting challenge of protecting this heritage. Apart from the glorious ancient times, the city also features elements of both the medieval and modern history of Greece," Panagiotopoulos said, noting that the nomination of Delphi is supported by the region of Central Greece, the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece and the European Cultural Centre of Delphi (ECCD).

On his part, the local governor of Central Greece Kostas Bakoyannis underlined that the centre of ancient Greece can become the cultural centre of Europe as it is the place that historically constituted the meeting point of cultures and development of new links between peoples.

[04] Anarchist group enters German envoy's residence to protest in favour of refugees

Members of the Greek anarchist group "Rubicon" entered the premises of the German ambassador's residence on Wednesday evening to protest against the closure of EU borders to refugees, police said.

About 20 members of the group hanged a banner on the house fence which read "Solidarity to refugees – Open the borders", signed by the group.

The group fled when they saw police arriving at the residence, but authorities say they have detained seven suspects.
