  • [01] Govt to lower proposed wine tax by half after reactions

The government on Thursday announced that it will halve a proposed excise tax on bottled wine, following high-pitched and extensive reactions by the wine-making sector and the political opposition.

Speaking during a debate on the omnibus bill that includes the third batch of prior actions required by the country's lenders, Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis said the tax will be set at 20 cents per liter, or 15 cents per a 750 ml bottle. Initially, the government eyed a tax of 40 cents per liter. The minister also said the tax will exclude exports but will be slapped on imported wines.

[02] Ryanair to offer flights from Athens to Dublin, Berlin in 2016

Ireland-based low-cost airline Ryanair will start two new routes from Athens to Dublin and Berlin next year, the company announced on Thursday.

According to a Ryanair executive, the route to Dublin will start in March 2016 with a frequency of three flights per week, while the route to Berlin will be covered with one daily flight.

The carrier also announced its winter schedule, which will increase the number of daily flights from Athens to Thessaloniki from six to eight.

[03] Commission refers Greece to ECJ for breaches on energy efficiency, Elefsina sewage

The European Commission on Thursday announced that it is taking action against Greece at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to comply with directives for building energy efficiency and inadequate treatment of sewage in the western Attica municipality of Elefsina.

The Commission said Greece had failed to carry out calculations for optimising the cost of energy efficiency measures, in accordance to a 2010 directive.

It had also reportedly failed to address problems with sewage treatment in highly industrialized Elefsina, 11 years after a ECJ ruling finding that these were inadequate. The Commission is, therefore, referring Greece to the Court again and wil recommend the imposition of fines.

[04] Fyrom authorities prevent passage to non-refugees; tension on border

A large number of third country nationals have been stranded on a border buffer zone between Greece and former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) after authorities in the neighboring country on Thursday closed the Idomeni border post.

The move prevented a group of roughly 200 Iranians, Tunisians and Moroccan nationals, who were gathered in front of the fence, from entering the land-locked country.

Late on Wednesday, authorities in Skopje announced that they will only allow the entrance only to Iraqi, Syrian and Afghani citizens, a decision that generated tension amongst the remaining group of third country nationals hosted in a temporary camp on the Greek side of the border.
