[02] Tsipras welcomes new PM Thanou at his office in handover ceremony
ANA - MPA -- Alexis Tsipras welcomed newly sworn-in Prime Minister
Vassiliki Thanou at his office at Maximos Mansion on Thursday evening
in a handover ceremony, saying he will do everything in his power to
create a "civilised" environment for the elections.
"I'm delighted to welcome you because I welcome the first female prime
minister in the history of Greek democracy. I am sure that both you
and the caretaker government you will appoint tomorrow will do your
best. I wanted to wish you the best. I will do everything possible to
hold elections in a civilized environment," Tsipras told Thanou in their
first face-to-face meeting.
On her side, Thanou said that although the main role of a caretaker
government is to hold elections, it may need to take action on ongoing
crises such as migration. "The caretaker government, as everyone knowns,
has as its main role to conduct fair elections. But I believe that this
government will be called to address crucial issues, such as migration,"
Thanou replied, adding that her government will do all they can to carry
out its responsibilities in the best possible way.
