[01] Sports Minister to ANA-MPA: Athens Olympic Games a catastrophe for
the Greek economy
ANA/MPA---Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis characterised the "Athens
Olympic Games a bad example" in an interview to ANA-MPA on the occasion
of the start of the European Championships in Baku.
Kontonis said that the way the Olympic Games were organised and the major
works in Athens were implemented was disastrous for the Greek economy and
for the regional growth which was never achieved in Greece in that period.
He estimated that the total cost of the Athens Olympic Games reached
20 bln euros and this is something that countries in similar financial
situation should be aware of.
Kontonis is in Baku representing the Greek government in the opening
ceremony of the 1rst European Games. He will also participate on Saturday
in the unofficial ministerial meeting of the 47 member states of the
Council of Europe.
