  • [01] Alternate Admin. Reform Minister Katrougalos sees 'white smoke' tonight

ANA/MPA---If our partners' last word was what we were told last week, our answer will be 'no'," Alternate Administrative Reform Minister George Katrougalos on Wednesday said in statements to ANT1 TV.

After the contacts of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Brussels, we will have 'white smoke' tonight, but only with a decent deal.

"We do not intend to implement the memorandum and implementation laws," Katrougalos said adding that if we were to sign a memorandum, we would "have proceeded with the fifth evaluation and with 7,000 layoffs" while he stressed that "there will be no memorandum, because we are not asking for new loans."

Katrougalos explained that there will be painful measures and added: "The difference is that we will have to take them in order to rely on the country's revenues and without a memorandum. That is why temporarily we will have an unfair tax system."

Referring to the long-term negotiations, he stressed that "the reason why we have not reached a deal is because we do not sign cuts in pensions."

He underlined that if a deal is reached, it will only be a "decent deal" adding that "the prospect of a rift is always existent if the creditors do not take a step back on the painful measures."

Asked whether SYRIZA's parliamentary group will approve the deal, he replied: "In order to reach a deal, it will have to be a decent one, otherwise it will not be signed by the prime minister. In that case, the parliament will approve it. It will certainly include some difficult measures, but the weak will not bear again the burden."

[02] Moderate earthquake rattles southeastern coast of Crete

ANA/MPA---An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred at 00:49 on Wednesday morning, in the sea area between Kasos and Crete, according to the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens.

The earthquake took place at a depth of about 10 kilometers, 29 kilometers south-southwest of Kasos and 49 kilometers south-southeast of Paleokastro in Sitia.

Six aftershocks, ranging from 2.5 to 3.1 Richter, followed.
