ANA-MPA- The meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday is "of historic significance", government sources said, as it marks the refounding and restart of Greek-Russian relations.

The Russian side, they said, showed extensive interest in investments of various sectors, while the path opened towards the construction of a Greek natural gas pipeline that will start at the Greek-Turkish borders, cross Greece and head towards Europe. It will be based on private funding and follow EU regulations and laws, bringing lower gas prices for Greece.

The two sides, the sources said, also worked on a formula of exporting Greek agricultural products to the Russian market through the founding of joint Greek-Russian companies.

Putin gave Tsipras as gift the icon of Sts. Nicholas and Spyridon, which had been stolen from Greece during WWII by a Nazi official (Miller) from the monastery of Sparta, in southern Greece, who was arrested by Russians and executed by local authorities in 1947. The icon was bought from relatives in order to give it as a gift to the Greek state.
