  • [01] National broadcaster ERT draft law tabled in parliament

ANA/MPA---The draft law for the new ERT, submitted on Wednesday to parliament, provided for the re-operation of all former broadcaster channels(ET1,NET,ET3), radio stations as well as the republication of Radiotileorasi magazine.

The draft law provided for balanced budgets, decrease of co-production and external productions, check of the past economic activity, abolition of high salaries and benefits of those working in the state broadcaster. Moreover, the direct control of ERT belongs to the State with penalty applications from the National Broadcaster Council (ESR).

In a letter submitted to parliament, State Minister Nikos Pappas explained that the new ERTs staff will be 2,500 persons.

ERT's board tenure will be five years which could be renewed once. Two of the board's members will represent the company's staff, one of them will be a journalist and will be elected by the staff. The other members of the board will be appointed following State Minister's public tender and a relevant recommendation to the parliament's Institution and Transparency committee which will express its opinion.

The specific draft law also introduces a principals contract between the Greek State and ERT following deliberations with ESR and the workers. The contract includes the conditions that will secure pluralism and polyphony in information, the upgrading of the national broadcaster's quality as well as the rules of transparency and financial sources.

Moreover, independent services or contract awards to natural or legal persons will be allowed following the recommendation of the managing director and the board's approval. However, the cost of the projects awarded cannot exceed 25 percent of the company's annual budget.
