[01] National broadcaster ERT draft law tabled in parliament
ANA/MPA---The draft law for the new ERT, submitted on Wednesday to
parliament, provided for the re-operation of all former broadcaster
channels(ET1,NET,ET3), radio stations as well as the republication of
Radiotileorasi magazine.
The draft law provided for balanced budgets, decrease of co-production
and external productions, check of the past economic activity,
abolition of high salaries and benefits of those working in the state
broadcaster. Moreover, the direct control of ERT belongs to the State
with penalty applications from the National Broadcaster Council (ESR).
In a letter submitted to parliament, State Minister Nikos Pappas explained
that the new ERTs staff will be 2,500 persons.
ERT's board tenure will be five years which could be renewed once. Two of
the board's members will represent the company's staff, one of them will
be a journalist and will be elected by the staff. The other members of
the board will be appointed following State Minister's public tender and
a relevant recommendation to the parliament's Institution and Transparency
committee which will express its opinion.
The specific draft law also introduces a principals contract between the
Greek State and ERT following deliberations with ESR and the workers. The
contract includes the conditions that will secure pluralism and polyphony
in information, the upgrading of the national broadcaster's quality as
well as the rules of transparency and financial sources.
Moreover, independent services or contract awards to natural or legal
persons will be allowed following the recommendation of the managing
director and the board's approval. However, the cost of the projects
awarded cannot exceed 25 percent of the company's annual budget.
