  • [01] Tsipras: I will not sign any agreement requested by lenders

ANA/MPA---Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras said in an interview to private Skai television on Monday that he will never sign an agreement requested by Greece's troika of lenders, as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has done, not just because he is not Samaras but also because there is an ethical perspective and "we do not have the right to make that blunder."

If talks fail between SYRIZA's government and the lenders, he said, the party will implement the programme announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair. Asked whether the country will not be excluded from markets, he said it already is excluded now.

Among other things, Tsipras stressed that he does not recognise the right of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to speak on behalf of the other 27 EU member-states and expressed the belief that the Europeans would not risk the mutilation of Europe in order to punish SYRIZA; attitudes about Greece are changing, he noted.

Asked whether he would collaborate with former PASOK officials, Tsipras said that not all former PASOK officials are con artists. SYRIZA will not be used to whitewash anyone, nor will it become exclusive.

To another question related to the safety of bank accounts, the main opposition leader said it was despicable and unethical that the prime minister made popular-style announcements about deposits. Even more unethical, he said, was for government representatives to spread fake news.

These rumours do not destabilise SYRIZA, he said, but the banking system itself, which has recently passed the stress tests and guarantees deposits. SYRIZA will not come vengefully, but it will publicly control banks, in collaboration with the European Central Bank.

[02] FM Venizelos to participate in NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels

ANA/MPA---Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos is in Brussels on Tuesday to participate in the Meeting of NATO member-state Foreign Ministers, according to a Finance ministry announcement.

The proceedings of the meeting will begin with a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting and continue with the meeting of the North Atlantic Council. Later, Venizelos will take part in the North Atlantic Council's meeting with the states considering participation in operation Resolute Action, in Afghanistan. On the margins of the meeting, Venizelos will meet with Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati.

On Wednesday, Venizelos will participate in the meeting of the coalition of countries against ISIL, which is also taking place in Brussels.

The Greek Finance Minister will then depart for Basel, Switzerland, where he will take part in the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the 2014 chairmanship of which is held by Switzerland. He will also attend a dinner hosted by the President and Foreign Minister of Switzerland, Didier Burkhalter, at which there will be a discussion of the Ukraine crisis and the OSCE's role in the conflict. On Thursday, Venizelos will address the plenary of the Ministerial Council.
