  • [01] Seven from 'Baris' ship of nearly 600 migrants arrested on Crete over human trafficking charges

ANA-MPA - Seven individuals on board of the freighter "Baris", which lost engine power off Crete while transporting 586 irregular immigrants in total from Turkey to Bari, are being detained on the Aegean island of Crete on criminal charges following an order by the Lassithi prosecutor, it was reported on Saturday.

The seven, aged 30 and 50 years old, were arrested on charges of exposing humans to danger and illegal transport of migrants for personal gain. They were among 21 people originally detained on November 27 on suspicion of human trafficking or for causing tension on the ship.

The men, who said they were Syrian nationals, were granted an extension until Monday to give their depositions.

Kiribati-flagged freighter "Baris" was found by local authorities sailing off Crete on November 25, and the migrants were brought ashore on November 27.

[02] Over 90 million illegal cigarettes on ferry confiscated in Megara

ANA-MPA - Over 90 million illegal cigarettes were confiscated by the Coast Guard on a ferry in the Pachi area of Megara, west of Athens, on Saturday morning, and seven crew members of Ukrainian nationality arrested.

Authorities said it is the second largest such haul ever and calculate the cost of lost revenues to the state to close to 30 million euros.

The cigarettes were packed in cartons and loaded on trucks on the ferry "Atlas". The ship, trucks and a truck on land were confiscated as well and the Athens misdemeanours prosecutor notified.

Port authorities said that the ferry had been used several times with different names, making it difficult to locate it until now.

Shipping and Aegean Minister Miltiadis Varvitisiotis congratulated the authorities.

[03] Mykonos becomes popular again among Australian tourists

ANA/MPA---The Aegean island of Mykonos will be the second most popular tourist destination for Australians in 2015, according to a Skyscanner survey based on recent online searches for holiday destinations.

According to the same survey, Asian Myanmar is the top destination for Australian travelers in 2015.
