  • [01] Tension in universities due to electronic vote

ANA-MPA -- The turmoil in universities continued on Friday after the University of Athens proposed the implementation of an electronic vote procedure for decisions regarding sit-ins, abstention from lessons and other issues.

However, in an attempt to defuse the situation, the rector of the Athens University Theodoros Fortsakis reiterated that this does not aim at the abolition of student unions and proposed the student unions decide on the electronic vote issue.

"We did not say that we want to abolish student unions. On the contrary, we want to strengthen them. The unions will decide whether they want the electronic vote," Fortsakis told Mega TV, adding that sit-ins "are not the best way to express demands; this should be done institutionally, through dialogue."

Meanwhile, the Law School, the Department of Mathematics as well as the rectorship of the Health Sciences, at the University of Athens, the Agriculture University are under occupation, while the sit-in the administration building of the National Technical University (NTUA) is expected to end later in the day.

Earlier on Friday, tension flared outside the Ministry of Education when the police prevented students, who had gathered to protest, to approach the ministry' gate.
