  • [01] SYRIZA leader Tsipras meets with AKEL sec.gen. Kyprianou

Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and AKEL secretary general Andros Kyprianou, during their meeting on Thursday, stressed the need for putting pressure on Turkey in order to take action to defuse tension in Cyprus.

Tsipras noted that there was a climate of instability in the wider Southeastern Mediterranean and added that the Turkish side opts for challenge and aggression, chooses to thwart the dialogue for resolving the Cyprus issue and undermine the sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic.

Greece, Tsipras said, should stand by the side of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people, making clear that no blackmail can lead to positive developments, while pointing out the need for the differences in the area to be handled only with dialogue.

SYRIZA leader underlined that the party asserts its determination on the same line with AKEL, "to bypass blackmail and pressures and lead the people of Cyprus to the selection of a fair solution that cannot be other than the bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, without foreign forces and settlers and without third party guarantors that will determine the course of the Cypriot people."

On his part, Kyprianou stressed the need to first defuse the crisis and then to set the conditions for the resumption of the talks, underlining the need for cautiousness and calmness.
