  • [01] SDOE uncovers tax fraud cases running to millions of euros in July

ANA-MPA - The SDOE financial crimes squad on Tuesday said it had uncovered cases of tax evasion running to millions of euros during the month of July, involving a number of companies and private individuals. Among them are six individuals included in the so-called Lagarde list of Greeks with large bank accounts at Switzerland's HSBC bank.

Most of the cases involved the issuing or receipt of fake tax documents, such as fake invoices, as well as, failure to issue receipts and file tax information on transactions.

Among those inspected were four private companies that issued fake tax documents amounting to 31,636,146 euros and paid no taxes for the transactions made.

[02] Chambers chief warns of possible natural gas shortage due to Russian embargo

ANA-MPA - Russia's embargo has caused chain reactions in Greece's economy and businesses, not just in exports but also in the country's supply with natural gas, the head the Central Association of Chambers and the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry Constantinos Michalos pointed out and called on the government to take initiatives on a European and national level so as to solve these problems.

Michalos noted that Greece has a high energy dependence on Russia and the possibility of the disruption of the natural gas flow directly from Russia or through Ukraine will cause huge problems in the operation of businesses as well as the Greek economy in general.

He also urged for a timely plan to deal with possible natural gas shortages and asked that preventive measures be taken.

He also called on the government to give back to natural gas consumers – as it has already announced – the significant amounts that natural gas corporation DEPA has received under an agreement reached last March with Russian Gazprom on the retrospective reduction of the natural gas prices.

[03] SETE confident that 19 million tourists target will be met despite losses from Russia, Ukraine

ANA-MPA - The Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) on Tuesday reiterated its confidence that the 19 million tourists target set for 2014 will be met, despite problems in the Russian and Ukrainian markets.

According to SETE's data on international arrivals in the January-July period, all the major airports in the country posted double-digit increases in July; the highest rates were recorded in Athens (+31 pct), Chania (+22.9 pct), Mykonos (+39.9 pct), Santorini (+26.7 pct) and Kalamata (+62.5 pct).

Athens is still on a recovery trend with a higher than 25 pct increase in July and 31 pct rise in the seven-month period and is apparently set to overcome the 2014 target of 750,000 additional arrivals.
