ANA-MPA -- The southern coast of the Aegean island of Crete experienced two earthquakes on Sunday, one in the early morning hours and another mid-day.

According to the Athens Planetarium's Geodynamics Institute, an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale occurred under the sea bed off the southern city of Ierapetra at 01:08. The epicenter was 5 km southeast of Ierapetra, and no damages were reported on land.

Another earthquake struck at 15:05 in the Tymbaki area, southwest of Ierapetra, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale (earlier reports by the Institute assessed it at 4.8). The epicenter was under the seabed off Tymbaki, which lies about 45 km southwest of Crete's largest city, Iraklio (Heraklio), where it was strongly felt. No injuries or damages were reported.
