  • [01] Interior Minister: Support package to quake stricken available immediately

    ANA-MPA/ Interior Minister Yiannis Mihelakis said on Tuesday at private TV Skai that the support package to the quake stricken citizens of Cephalonia will be available immediately.

    The Labour Ministry has offered 100,000 euros to the municipalities of Cephalonia and Ithaca for the directly stricken citizens. Moreover, the contributions to social security funds have been suspended for three months for the citizens of Cephalonia and Ithaca islands while the Finance Ministry has given a three month extension for the payment of debts and tax statements.

    Moreover, Piraeus Bank on Monday decided to suspend for one month the payments of all Cephalonia citizens while the Union of Greek Banks will meet later on Tuesday in order to face the issue on the whole.

    [02] Fresh snow at Greek ski resorts

    Fresh snow is falling over the last hours in all ski resorts of Greece.

    Snow chains are necessary to those who decide to visit the mountains.

    Nine ski resorts and 27 ski lifts are currently open with total length 17,713 meters.

    The weather is expected to get better on Wednesday while according to the weather forecast new snowfall is expected from Saturday afternoon.

    Cold weather prevails in Northern Greece and particularly in Thessaloniki, Kilkis, Veria and Serres where the temperature is 1C with clouds and rain.

    In Edessa, Florina and Grevena the temperature has dropped to -2C, while the ski centers in Kaimaktsalan (Voras Mt.) and Vasilitsa are operating normally.

    Snow chains however are needed for vehicles moving from Kerasia to Agios Athansios.

    Frost prevails in several sections of the road network of Central and Western Macedonia, therefore drivers should be cautious.
