ANA-MPA-- Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos attended a EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday in Brussels, according to a ministry statement.

The morning session focused on the talks regarding EU's stance on Syria and particularly the upcoming Geneva conference on Syria (Geneva II), following the invitation sent to Iran.

Venizelos said that two days before Geneva II, it was important to safeguard the credibility and the legitimacy of the procedure. From this point of view, it was crucial to avoid giving any impression of disagreement between EU's Foreign Affairs Council and the United Nations secretary general, who is hosting the meeting and gives the institutional guarantees on its procedures. It was also crucial to keep pressing Syria's moderate opposition, until the last minute, so that it participates in the meeting even after Iran was invited.

Regarding Egypt, Venizelos pointed out that the country was still in an emergency situation and the road map presented by the government should be implemented.

He underlined the need for a truly inclusive framework. Although the approval of the new Constitution, through the recent referendum, is not enough, it still is a major step. Venizelos added that the European Union should send a message to the Egyptian people and government that it encourages and supports its course towards institutional normality.
