  • [01] SYRIZA leader: Democracy non-negotiable; end to austerity

Democracy is in danger and is retreating due to the neoliberal austerity that provokes recession and the skyrocketing of the unemployment rate, said SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras speaking on Saturday at an event in Netherlands organised by the Dutch Socialist Party (SP) on the issue "Democracy, Economy and Society".

The democratic reorganisation of the European Union is central in our pre-electoral campaign for the EC presidency as well as the immediate end of the austerity. The austerity policy that has been proven an economic and social disaster, a disaster for democracy, it must stop immediately, said Tsipras and underlined that the austerity is a crisis by itself, it is not a solution for the crisis.

SYRIZA leader and candidate for the Europarliament presidency referred to the repercussions from the memorandums and sternly attacked prime minister Antonis Samaras' governments and to the troika of Greece's lenders stating that Greece is being led to a third memorandum.

"We say that the European Union either will be democratic or it would not exist at all" opined Tsipras underlining that "democracy for us is non-negotiable' and warned of the xenophobia, nationalism and racism phenomena that have appeared in the Netherlands and in Greece.

Finally, Tsipras expressed the certainty that the Left will be the positive surprise in May's euroelections.

The event was held at the Socialist Party of Holland headquarters in Amersfoort.
