[01] Athens mayor turns on Christmas lights in AthensANA-MPA -- Athens Mayor George Kaminis on Tuesday evening turned on the Christmas lights in the centre of Athens, starting with the Christmas boat that will decorate Syntagma Square during the holidays. The lighting of the city's Christmas decorations marked the start of the festive season and a programme of events in streets and squares laid on by the municipality that will last until January 15.The mayor also commenting on the harsher weather ahead, noting that Athens may well have a white Christmas this year, when many people were struggling to cope with the crisis. "The municipality, its people and structures will be at the side of those that need them. Merry Christmas," he said. The event, which included a concert after the mayor gave the signal to light the Christmas light, was slightly marred by the heavy rain that fell and discouraged many people from attending. The Christmas boat, which replaces the tree put up in previous years, is a traditional Greek Christmas decoration. Music, ice rink and 16 Christmas trees at Syntagma Square for holiday season The City of Athens will host a series of events for the Christmas season at Syntagma Square. The events include music, performances, educational programmes, carols, clown, acrobat, and juggling acts, workshops for children and adults, dancing, elves and fairytales, a puppet show and the international mime star Roland Zee, who studied at the Marcel Marceau school. Celebrations opened on Tuesday with the square's illumination of an arrangement of 16 Christmas trees created by AKTO school students on a metal platform. Before the installation, an ice rink of 200 square metres will open daily during the holiday season, with free entrance. Also on the Syntagma Square kiosks will be set up by 18 organisations involved in assisting vulnerable social groups; volunteers will inform visitors about their programmes and ways of contributing to them. mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family: "Courier New";color:#0F1419;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US; Normal 0 false false false EL X-NONE X-NONE DefSemiHidden="true" DefQFormat="false" DefPriority="99" /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} Athens News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
