[02] Draft bill for helping struggling borrowers sent to Parliament

ANA/MPA--A draft bill designed to ease the plight of borrowers struggling to service their loans was approved by Parliament's Committee for Production and Trade and forwarded to the Parliament plenum, where the debate before the final vote will begin on Monday.

The New Democracy party that leads the ruling coalition voted in favour of all articles but the two junior coalition partners, PASOK and Democratic Left (DIM.AR) expressed misgivings about articles 2 and 5, which determine the conditions for entering a debt settlement programme. DIM.AR additional raised objections to article 10, which states that a borrower is only eligible for inclusion in such a programme once.

Of the opposition parties, main opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA-EKM) voted against all the articles in the bill except article 17, which gives the courts powers to satisfy the demands of creditors to a sum equalling 80 percent of the tax-office assessed value of a main home. Objections were expressed by the Independent Greeks and Golden Dawn parties, while the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) voted against all the articles in the bill.
