[01] Submerged antiquities found off Zakynthos coastANA/MPA--A submerged archaeological site was discovered off the Alikanas beach on northeast Zakynthos, the Ionian Sea island. The site covers about 3 hectares and lies 2 to 6 metres deep. According to the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities it contains a visible courtyard, dispersed building material and at least 20 circular column bases, with a 34cm hollow in the centre where a wooden column may have been inserted. The pieces at initial assessment appear to belong to a large public building, possibly related to the ancient port, but dating is not possible yet as no pottery has been found on the surface. The size of the building however attests to the wealth of the community at Alikanas, archaeologists said. Zakynthos authorities and the Ephorate, which was invited by the former to investigate, are planning to begin mapping the area immediately. [02] Aegean Airlines to fly to Cairo, and from Crete to IstanbulANA/MPA--Aegean Airlines said on Thursday it would introduce Crete-Istanbul flights in June and Athens-Cairo flights in October. In an announcement, Aegean said it would offer Thursday and Sunday flights from the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport in Heraklio, on the island of Crete, as of June 13 with two flights per week every Thursday and Sunday. The first 3,000 tickets for the Heraklion-Istanbul flight will be on special offer for 59 euros (taxes included). On October 3, Aegean will inaugurate direct flights from the Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International airport to Cairo International Airport every Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The flights will be on Airbus A320 aircrafts with an 168-seat capacity. As Airlines managing director Dimitrios Gerogiannis noted, "The seasonal linking of Heraklion with Istanbul is an extremely positive development that will contribute in the further boosting of the touristic and the trading relations between the largest Greek tourism destination, Crete, and the rapidly developing market of Turkey. Moreover, we are returning to Egypt's market by connecting Athens with Cairo again, after a two-year absence." Athens News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
