  • [01] Four police injured, 50 migrants arrested during riot at detention centre

    AMNA / Four police officers were injured and 50 migrants were arrested on Friday during clashes with rioting illegal migrants detained at the police academy barracks in the northeast city of Komotini.

    The violence started at around 1:30 p.m. when the illegal migrants housed in the academy began rioting in protest against the conditions in which they are being held, causing extensive damage to the dormitories and setting fire to mattresses. Afterwards, using bars of metal that they pulled off the beds, doors and windows, before clashing with the police, who made use of tear gas to quell the uprising.

    According to the latest report, calm has now been restored and the foreign national detainees have returned to their dormitories.amna

    [02] CEO: Nat'l Bank-Eurobank deal final in Jan. 2013

    AMNA / National Bank's public offer to buy Eurobank will be completed in the first few weeks of 2013, while full integration will be implemented in a period of two to three years, National Bank chief executive Alexandros Tourkolias said on Friday.

    Addressing a repeat general shareholders' meeting, Tourkolias said the new bank will be a leader in the domestic market and will be among the 30 largest European banks, while he added that the need for consolidation in the domestic banking system will be more necessary than ever, as it could lead to the creation of three strong banking groups.

    Tourkolias told the bank's shareholders that National Bank has received an irreversible commitment on behalf of Eurobank's main shareholders – representing around 44 pct of the Eurobank's share capital - that they will accept National Bank's public offer.www.amna.gr

    National Bank chairman, G. Zannias, addressing the meeting, said progress made so far was unprecedented and stressed that the country was very near the point of reversing a negative economic course.amna

    [03] EIB approves 650-mln-euro loan for road projects

    AMNA--The European Investment Bank (EIB) on Wednesday approved a 650-million-euro loan to Greece aimed to support the restart of works in major Greek road projects. The loan will cover the Greek state's financial obligations for the national road network linking Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki, with benefits for all contractors. This significant developments comes at a crucial moment, when negotiations to restarting the road project are currently underway.

    "The decision will have significant impact on employment, development and will help towards the recovery of the Greek economy," a Development ministry statement said.amna

    EIB is supporting Greece's efforts to return to growth and plans to approve a credit facility of more than 700 million euros aimed for small- and medium-sized enterprises in the transport, education and energy sectors.amna
