[01] A rare view of the Parthenon from the south
AMNA / A view of the south side of the Parthenon, atop the Acropolis
in central Athens, illuminated by the pre-dusk winter sunlight on
Thursday, 19 January 2012. Only the very top of the Parnitha mountain
range, in the background, appears speckled with snow, something that
is forecast to change over the coming weekend, with snowfall predicted
to fall throughout the greater Athens area. This seldom used angle to
photograph the Parthenon, viewing directly south to north, vividly
chronicles the damage done to the monument during the 1687 siege of
an Ottoman garrison by a Venician expeditionary force. A Venetian
mortar struck a munitions store in the Parthenon, causing the greatest
destruction to date in its 2,400-year history. AMNA / O. PANAGIOTOU
