  • [01] Winter hiking at Prespes-area ski resort

AMNA--A unique, by Greek standards, winter activity, complete with hiking in snow-covered forests in traditional snow shoes, leggings and ski sticks, was inaugurated at the ski resort of Vigla, in the mountainous part of Florina, in northwest Greece.

"The walk in the snow-covered forest with snow shoes is something new in the region, despite the fact that in other countries to see it more often. This activity is safe, because it reduces the chances of a hiker sinking into the snow; there are no special knowledge or experience need, such as skiing, and it is particularly liked, especially by children," according to Marie Archer, a French national and tour guide who has resided permanently in the region for the past five years. amna

The verdant region is best known for the Prespes Lakes habitat and several pristine peaks on Greece's border with Albania and the one-time Yugoslavia.

Tours around the resort include lectures on local flora and fauna as well as on local wise tales and legends. amna
