  • [01] Marathon PASOK meeting

AMNA--Procedures towards a wide-ranging internal party dialogue will begin in PASOK after the New Year, which however may not necessary include procedures for a new leader, a party spokesman said after a 12-hour meeting of PASOK's political council meeting on Tuesday .

The meeting lasted until 4 a.m.

PASOK spokesman Panos Beglitis avoided reference to the thorny leadership issue, merely citing a "probable change", which, as he noted, will occur as a result of previous procedures.

The up-until-recently ruling party will convene on January 4, during which embattled PASOK president George Papandreou will present a report on procedures to be followed.

More importantly, government Vice President and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said it is impossible for him to continue negotiations for the PSI and a new loan agreement and at the same time participate in PASOK's internal procedures.

Venizelos predicted that negotiations will be completed within a four-month period, adding that in his opinion the date of early elections will not come before late April.

[02] Greek trade deficit down 27.3%

AMNA--Greece's trade deficit shrank by 29.6 pct in October, reflecting higher exports and lower imports because of a deep economic recession in the country, the Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Tuesday.

The statistics service, in a report, said the value of import-arrivals – excluding oils - totaled 2.43 billion euros in October, down from 3.045 billion euros in the same month last year, a a decline of 20.2 pct. amna

The value of exports-deliveries – excluding oils - totaled 1.316 billion euros in October from 1.463 billion euros in October 2010, a decline of 10 pct. The country’s trade deficit fell to 1.114 billion euros in October, down from 1.582 billion euros in the same month last year.

The value of imports fell 12.4 pct to 26.904 billion euros in the January-October period, while the value of exports rose 11.7 pct to 13.093 billion euros in the same period, leaving the trade deficit 27.3 pct lower compared with the same period in 2010, to 13.811 billion euros.

[03] Athens issues demarche over Yilmaz claim

AMNA--The Greek foreign ministry on Tuesday delivered a demarche to the Turkish embassy's charge d'affaires in Athens in the wake of an eyebrow-raising claim by former Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz of Turkish agents setting fire to Greek forests between 1995 and 1995. amna

The incendiary statement was carried by Turkish media this past week, although Yilmaz on Tuesday reversed his statement before inquiring television reporters. amna

The demarche was conveyed following a relevant order by Foreign Minister Stavros Dimas. amna

According to a relevant announcement by the foreign ministry "regardless of the effort for (the claim's) retraction by Mr. Yilmaz, an investigation of these statements was requested, and of corresponding reports that have come to light in the past, as well as a relevant briefing of the Greek side on every relative piece of evidence."
