  • [01] Surtax on property paid in 5 tranches via power bill

AMNA / An extraordinary surtax on real estate for 2012 will be paid by taxpayers in five two-month installments, according to a legislative act published in the Government Gazette, which clarified that the surtax will again, as in 2011, be collected through the Public Power Corporation (PPC) electricity bills.

The act further clarified that excessive sums paid by taxpayers on the 2011 surtax due to mistakes in the calculation of the controversial surtax will be balanced on March 31 against the 2012 installments.

According to the decision, even if mistakes have been pinpointed in the calculation of the surtax, the taxpayer is obliged to pay the amount within the designated deadline, and the excessive sum paid will be balanced on March 31, 2012.

[02] Greek merchant fleet down in Oct. 2011

AMNA / The Greek merchant fleet declined by 3.8 percent (vessels of 100 grt and over) in October 2011 over October 2010, against a 0.4 percent reduction in the period of October 2010 over October 2009, according to figures released on Monday by the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), dropping to 2,028 vessels

[03] Four arrests in migrant smuggling raid

AMNA / Four alleged migrant-runners were arrested near the western port town of Preveza and in Athens during a police operation over the weekend that broke up a migrant-smuggling ring.

Two Greek nationals and two foreign nationals, aged 25-59, were arrested in simultaneous police operations in Preveza and Athens, while 56 illegal migrants were detained.

The four are said by police to be members of a ring that smuggled migrants into Greece and transported them to various parts of the country.

Two of the suspects were arrested in Preveza while transporting the 56 illegals, including three minors, in two vehicles.

The other two suspects were arrested in Athens, where they were coordinating the transport of the non-legal migrants by ferry to Italy, which was the final destination. www.amna.gr

According to police the migrants paid the sum of 1,800 euros each to the migrant-smuggling ring. amna
