[01] 92 illegal migrants rescued in SW Aegean
AMNA / Ninety-two illegal immigrants packed onto a decrepit commercial
fishing vessel were rescued by a US-flagged freighter on Friday off the
southwestern Aegean island of Kythira, following a cell phone call to
the European emergency number “112” requesting urgent assistance.
The would-be migrants, all identified as Egyptian males, were transported
by the freighter to the southwestern Greek port city of Kalamata,
where they were temporarily housed in a harbor warehouse. www.amna.gr
A massive search by coast guard vessels, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft
and six freighteró commenced after the cell phone call, ostensibly made
by a passenger onboard the vessel as it sailed through rough seas in
