AMNA--PASOK leader, former prime minister and President of Socialist International (SI) George Papandreou will be on Thursday in Brussels where in the afternoon he will meet with the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

On Friday noon, Papandreou will speak at the opening of a two-day SI meeting taking place in Brussels.

[02] Police evict occupying unionists from PPC premises

AMNA / Riot police stormed the state-run Public Power Corp.'s (PPC) data processing building in northeast Athens early Thursday morning to evict PPC union members occupying the building in jprotest to an extraordinary surtax on real estate slapped onto electricity bills.

The PPC has traditionally allowed users to make arrangements with the utility to pay high electricity bills in instalments, if needed. But with the inclusion of the surtax in the electricity bills, such arrangements can no longer be made, and the PPC must proceed with cutting off power to users who do not pay the entire sum -- electricity bill and surtax -- by the due date.

Union (GENOP) members have since Sunday blocked off the building housing the unit, which issues the orders for a discontinuation of power supply to users with overdue debts.

Some 15 union protestors, including GENOP president Nikos Fotopoulos, were taken into custody by police.
