[01] Papademos at presidential mansion; reports cite new PM
AMNA-- Former Greek central banker and European Central Bank (ECB)
vice-president Loukas Papademos arrived at the presidential mansion
in central Athens shortly after noon on Thursday as political party
leaders were convening under President Karolos Papoulias to select a
new interim coalition prime minister.
Papademos, cited as one of the most influential Greek citizens in
Europe, was summoned to the meeting in order to be handed a mandate to
form a crucial coalition Greek government, replacing outgoing PM George
Papandreou and the current Cabinet, whose members hail from the ruling
PASOK party.
If the development materialises, it will conclude several days of public
and often behind-the-scenes negotiations by the two mainstream parties
in the country, PASOK and main opposition New Democracy, to agree on a
new premier and Cabinet. AMNA
