Germany's State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, Stefan Kapferer, emphasised that the "the great hope and struggle is for the recession to be overcome early, so that 2012 will be a starting point for the Greek economy."

    [02] Wildfire in Evros continues to rage

    ANA-MPA/A major wildfire that broke out on Wednesday in Lefkimi, Evros prefecture in NE Greece, was still raging early Friday afternoon.

    Four firefighting airplanes, two French and two Spanish, are due to arrive later on Friday to contribute to the local fire brigade's operation.

    Gusty winds in the affected area exasperated the situation. ana-mpa

    According to the fire brigade, five-kilometre long wildfire has already scorched 3,000 hectares of forestland and crops.

    The area south of Lefkimi has been declared in state of emergency and the village of Kili has been evacuated.

    [03] 2.2% hike in cost of average household goods

    ANA-MPA/The cost of a 'basket of goods' for the average Greek household rose to 2,275.33 euros in July 2011, according to figures released by the Greek Consumers Centre ELKEKA on Thursday. Based on figures, this represents a 2.4-percent increase relative to July 2010, when the same basket of goods cost 2,222.04 euros.ana-mpa

    The highest increases were for housing costs, which posted hikes reaching 8 percent, followed by a 4-percent hike in foods and beverages and a 4 percent increase in transport costs.
