[01] Taxi owners suspend strike
Taxi owners throughout Greece on Friday announced the suspension of their
strike after nearly a month of mobilisations that included blockades of
the country's ports and airports.
The decision to end the strike was taken during a more than three-hour
general assembly of the nationwide federation of taxi owners.
Following the suspension of the strike, taxis are expected to reappear
immediately on Greek streets.
[02] PM reply letter to Commission chief
ANA-MPA/Greek prime minister George Papandreou stressed that
implementation of the July 21 eurozone summit decisions is imperative,
and must be done so promptly and effectively, in a letter to European
Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, responding to Barroso's recent
letter to the EU member states' leaders.
Papandreou noted that, beyond the implementation of the summit decisions,
a consistent effort will also be need for further institutional upgrading
"so that we will always be ahead of the developments, rather than behind
them", with respect with the EU's actions in relation to the moves by
the market.
The Greek premier further noted to Barroso that the decisions of the July
21 eurozone summit in Brussels must be advanced by the authoritative
European institutional bodies, the member states and, chiefly, by the
national parliaments.
