  • [01] PM: I am aware of my responsibilities

ANA-MPA/Greece is at a "historically critical" moment, prime minister George Papandreou said on Wednesday, and reiterated his call for national understanding, as he was greeted at the Presidential Mansion by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias for an extraordinary meeting asked by the premier.

Papandreou said that, even today, he was in contact with the leaders of the other political parties to seek understanding, adding: "Everyone undertakes his responsibilities. I am aware of my responsibilities and the responsibilities of my government towards the Greek people and the country."

"In every instance, we will move ahead, with this sense of responsibility, for the necessary decisions in order for the country to exit the crisis," Papandreou added.

Papoulias stressed the need for a nationwide effort.

[02] Eurogroup debates 2nd aid package to Greece

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA) - Eurozone ministers met here on Tuesday to debate plans to make Greece's private creditors share in the costs of a second bailout package for the east Mediterranean country. Some steps forward were made during the meeting without however reaching agreement on important issues.

No statements were made at the end of the ministers session. EU sources, however, said that the debate focused mainly on the form that the private secror's participation would take in the second aid package to Greece with the so-called "Vienna Initiative" prevailing in the discussions.

The meeting confirmed a diversion of views between Germany and the European Central Bank.

EU sources also said that during a special Eurogroup meeting next Sunday, an effort will be made for the finding of a formula that would dissociate the release of the fifth tranche of a 110-billion-euro loan agreed with the EU, the ECB and the IMF from a comprehensive decision for the second aid package which could be taken on Ecofin's meeting on July 12. [03] PM to continue phone contacts with party leaders after meeting with President

ÁÍÁ-ÌPA/Prime minister George Papandreou will continue his round of telephone contacts on Wednesday with the political party leaders after his extraordinary meeting with Karolos Papoulias, government sources said, adding that the premier had spoken only with Communist Party of Greece (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga and Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis before the meeting with the President.ana-mpa

The sources said that the premier would call main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras, Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) leader George Karatzaferis, Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA parliamentary alliance) parliamentary group leader Alexis Tsipras and Democratic Alliance leader Dora Bakoyannis after his meeting with the President.

Papandreou, the sources continued, would not make statements after his audience with Papoulias at the Presidential Mansion, but would make an address to the people later.

The government sources left open all prospects, but for the time being ruled out snap elections.

A statement by Papandreou as he entered into the meeting with Papoulias that even today he was in contact with the party leaders to seek consensus sparked denials of such telephone contacts by ND and SYRIZA.

    [04] Nationwide media strike suspended

(ANA-MPA) -- A previously announced 24-hour media strike in Greece on Wednesday -- coinciding with a general strike called by the two largest unions in the country -- was suspended before noon the same day. A national media sector umbrella federation, POESY, referred to "ongoing developments" in the country in rescinding the industrial action.

Amongst others, the eagerly watched Mid-term Fiscal Strategic Programme -- the second bundle of austerity measures, tax hikes and accelerated reforms and privatisations to meet EC-ECB-IMF Memorandum conditions -- will be tabled in Parliament for debate.

Outside, tens of thousands of protesters were congregating in and around Syntagma Square, in front of Parliament.

Moreover, President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias was set to receive Prime Minister George Papandreou for a last-minute meeting requested by the latter. (ANA-MPA)
