[01] Animal rights groups protest outside Fur Show
Members of animal rights groups and independent organisations staged a
protest demonstration on Saturday outside the venue where the 1st
International Fur Show is being held in Athens.
Minor tension erupted when demonstrators blocked participants from
entering the trade fair's venue, the Expo Athens building, but quickly
died down.
"The organisation of such a fair in the midst of an economic crisis is
an unprecedented and provocative action," Rita Anestopoulou, a member
of the nationwide coordinating committee of animal rights groups, told
ANA-MPA.
According to rights groups representatives, an estimated 50 million
animals are killed annually throughout the world for the fur trade.
