  • [01] Premier meets with Israeli FM

    Prime minister George Papandreou on Thursday met with visiting Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman.

    No statements were made after the meeting.

    Papandreou is further due to hold talks with the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), while in the afternoon he will also meet with visiting European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier.

    [02] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 1.07 percent, standing at 1,453.36 points at 11:30 am, and turnover at 26.539 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest gains in Financial Services, up 1.82 percent; Travel & Recreation, up 1.74 percent, and Banks, up 1.35 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Commerce, down 0.98 percent, and Mass Media, down 0.55 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.23 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.45 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 1.47 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 59 were up, 16 were down, and 25 were unchanged.

    The bill on mass transit restructuring and reactions and economic issues were the main front-page items in Athens' dailies on Thursday.

    IMERISSIA: "Ambitious moves in EU for exit from crisis".

    KATHIMERINI: "Critical turning point for urban transport".

    LOGOS: "Brake (on public transport) due to mergers".

    NAFTEMPORIKI: "European support sends signal to the markets - One step closer to definitive solution of the European debt".

    NIKI: "Reduction of salaries - Reduction of benefits - Reduction of personnel".
