  • [01] Explosion reported outside Swiss embassy

A minor explosion occurred on Tuesday outside the Swedish embassy in Athens. Police were investigating whether the explosion was linked with a spate of parcel bombs intercepted by Greek authorities on Monday.

(ANA-MPA) Earlier, 'suspicious' envelope was spotted at the Bulgarian embassy in the Neo Psychico suburb of Athens by embassy employees, who immediately alerted the police.

According to initial information, the envelope reached the embassy by postal mail, but it has not yet been clarified who the sender and specific recipient are.

A police counter-terrorism squad unit and bomb disposal experts were currently at the embassy examining the parcel.

Three parcel bombs were intercepted by Greek authorities on Monday, while a third exploded in the hands of a courier company employee, causing minor injuries, and two suspects were arrested.

One of the three parcel bombs intercepted by Greek authorities on Monday had been destined for the president of France Nicolas Sarkozy, the Greek Police counter-terrorism squad revealed.

    Ballistics

Meanwhile a police crime lab ballistics investigation of the two Glock pistols was completed on Tuesday morning, according to which neither of the weapons had been used in attacks by terror group "Revolutionaries' Sect", although the investigation was continuing to see whether they have been used in other terrorist actions or in incidents of common crime.ANA-MPA

The 22-year-old detainee will be taken before a public prosecutor in the early afternoon with regard to the outstanding arrest warrant for him, while both detainees will appear before a prosecutor later with respect to the parcel bombs.

    [02] Hytiris: PM not bluffing

-P/Alternate Culture Minister Telemachos Hytiris on Tuesday reiterated that the prime minister is not "bluffing" when referring to the possibility of snap elections, in a bid to solidify and consolidate support amid the unprecedented economic crisis battering the country and a series of austerity and restructuring measures taken to overcome the crisis.

Speaking to a local radio station, and in reply to a comment by main opposition New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, who dismissed the notion that Papandreou will call a snap election, Hytiris, a former government spokesman in a previous PASOK government, said:

"I believe he (Samaras) does not know Papandreou that well, despite the fact that they were college mates. The prime minister is very determined and decisive. It would not be prudent to believe that this is a bluff, because it is not; the situation is not one of a whim or bluff. All of us politicians, including Mr. Samaras, must stand based on the current situation and reality."
