  • [01] Stocks end significantly down

    Stocks came under strong pressure at the Athens Stock Exchange on Wednesday to end significantly lower, with investor sentiment hit by a sharp rise in Greek bond spreads and rumors of new share capital increase plans by Greek banks.

    Teh composite index fell 1.88 pct to end at 1,577.89 points, with turnover at 124.334 million euros. The Big Cap index fell 1.98 pct, the Mid Cap index fell 1.72 pct and the Small Cap index eased 0.97 pct. Eurobank (3.89 pct), National Bank (3.0 pct) and PPC (2.98 pct) were main losers among blue chip stocks.

    The Chemicals sector was the only one to score gains (0.74 pct), while Health (6.65 pct), Media (3.73 pct) and Banks (2.32 pct) suffered the heaviest percentage losses of the day.

    Broadly, decliners led advancers by 112 to 47 with another 50 issues unchanged. Eurobrokers (18.75 pct), Compucon (12.5 pct) and Atlantic (10 pct) were top gainers, while Mouzakis (14.29 pct), Alpha Grisin (10 pct) and Edrasi (10 pct) were top losers.
